Claire Thomson - Director of Staging Rooms
Things have been busy here this last couple of weeks as our eldest goes off to university. It’s a big move and a lot of re-adjustment for the whole family. I couldn’t help but reflect on the last 18 years as he left the safety and comfort of his own bedroom at home to move to his own flat.
His new ‘abode’ was nice enough, but it still felt really cold and impersonal, lacking in character. As a home staging expert I understand more than most that we needed to transform this space into a welcoming haven to minimise homesickness and maximise productivity! So we hit the shops…
The shopping trip for university essentials may be a drain on your bank balance, but it is actually a vital investment in their emotional wellbeing. Here's why:
Personalisation: Carefully chosen bedding, storage solutions, and decorative items help to create a sense of home.
Productivity: A well-organised, aesthetically pleasing space can boost motivation and focus.
Emotional Support: Familiar items and cosy touches can alleviate homesickness and reduce feelings of isolation.
Small Changes, Big Impact
We knew the space had to be functional, ensuring that there was a place to work at his computer, but it needed more than that.
So, we went back to home staging basics with these simple yet effective additions:
Greenery: Plants not only purify the air but also bring life to a room.
Lighting: Soft lighting options like a nice desk lamp creates a warm ambiance.
Reflective Surfaces: Mirrors can make a small space feel larger and brighter.
With a few family photos dotted around and his own things in place (tidily… for now), the place was starting to look so much more inviting!
Refreshing Your Own Nest: Creating a Dual-Purpose Guest Room
Whilst we have promised not to touch a thing in his bedroom at home, I know that many people in the same situation are starting to think about repurposing their room. Maybe you are considering transforming it into a dual-purpose space that serves as both a guest room and then a welcoming retreat for your child during holidays.
Here’s how:
Comfortable Bedding: Invest in a quality bed or sofa bed that ensures comfort for guests and your child when they return home.
Personal Touches: Incorporate elements that remind your child of home, such as family photos or their favourite artwork, to make the space feel familiar and inviting.
Functional Decor: Use versatile furniture like a desk or reading nook that can serve both guests and your child, providing a space to relax or study.
Balancing Style and Functionality
Neutral Palette with Accents: Choose neutral colours for the room, adding ‘pops’ of colour with cushions or throws that can easily be updated.
Smart Storage Solutions: Integrate storage options like shelves or under-bed storage to keep the room organised and clutter-free.
Embracing these changes can enhance your living environment, making it both functional and enjoyable.
